The Picasso. A young Maryknoll nun softly murmurs, âItâs just beautiful. I canât explain it. Itâs airborne. And so graceful. Astonishing.â Amazing Grace, perhaps?
On the bench, the wizened old-timer has some difficulty with my question, as I shout in his ear. My mike dangles, hopefully. What do you think of this statue, sir?
âHeh, heh.â This one really cackles. âIâll bet you Iâm the oldest person here. I was ninety just last week.â
Congratulations.
âYep. Do you know, I delivered Western Union messages on roller skates. Lake Street, just down there.â
Terrific. Iâm shouting, What do you think of that statue?
âHeh. You know what theyâd pay for that?â
For what?
âA telegraph boy. It wouldnât buy a pack of chewngum today. Oh, yeah, them were the days. Yep.â
Thatâs by a famous artist, Pablo Picasso.
âYeahhh.â He breathes, with some effort. âHow come itâs crowded today? I used to have this bench all to myself. Yâknow?â
Yeah, I know. Well, thatâs how it goes.
Somebody in the crowd motions me toward a blonde of indeterminate years who appears to be lecturing to a group near the statue. Sheâs a cross between Sophie Tucker and Zsa Zsa Gabor.
âWatcha got there, dahlink? Your lunch?â
My Uher tape recorder does bear a vague resemblance to an old-time lunch bucket.
âDahlink, Iâm in show business, too.â
What do you think of it? I point at the Picasso. She follows my finger.
âYou know vat I told the people here?â
Vat?
âI said, Vereâs the American flag? I donât see no flag. I said it just like that; nobody told me. See, up there, thereâs a flag now. Salute the flag, everybody.â
She salutes.
Two men standing toward the rear back off slightly as I approach. âWe work for the city,â one says.
Whatâs your opinion?
âCould be worse. Could be Hoagy Carmichael or somepân.â
Stokely C had been raising some sort of fuss in town a week or so before.
The other says, âYou want my opinion? If itâs good enough for Maredaley, itâs good enough for me.â
A few years later, I asked Annie. Or was it Bertha? Call her a bag lady, if youâre so inclined. She was seen on more than one occasion near the masterwork.
Holding up pretty well, isnât it?
âOh, yeah. Itâs great to snuggle under at night. When it ainât too cold.â
